Shenlei Flasheart’s Mainely Men Corporate Menswear

I, sadly, have attended very few fashion shows/exhibits in SL, and would always like to attend more. Unfortunately, timing has often been incompatible given my busy schedule.

However, this past weekend, timing was good for Shenlei Flasheart’s Mainely Men Corporate Menswear event. And so I went, accompanied by my Lady, Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks. The models and attendees were very congenial. The environment, while a little different (and I do like the unique), was skillfully arranged, and quite ingenious. Although it may seem unusual to view models showcasing corporate fashion wares in the midst of a forest, the experience was extremely pleasant.

While I do understand the idea that if I have nothing nice to say, I should not say anything at all, I have no compunctions regarding offering an honest critique when I am compelled; and I am currently compelled. I am sorry to say that I was quite unimpressed with Shenlei Flasheart’s corporate clothing line, which I was lead to believe would be “the thing to wear” by real corporate businessmen in SL.

I do know that not everyone can create fashions with prims, but even those who cannot and purport to be experienced designers, often do reasonably well with texturing system clothing templates. Unfortunately, this was not the case with the Mainely Men Corporate Menswear line (I confess I am unfamiliar with Shenlei Flasheart’s clothing offerings, never having heard of her before). Never mind the fact that all the ensembles were exactly styled, only using different textures, the textures themselves were misaligned along the seams and the jacket lapels suffered a serious unattractive burn. I do not believe that even some time spent on one’s office treadmill would cause such off-putting discolouration from perspiration.

Granted, not everyone can be a great fashion designer. And I fully support hobbies and people doing the best that they can.  SL is nothing if not cathartic and a wondrous place to play.  I only wish that my available time would coordinate better with exhibits featuring designers of truly magnificent fashions. Some day… some day.

Shocking as it may be that I am looking down upon a fashion designer, I have always maintained, particularly in my blog, that I will offer unabashed, honest opinions. And as much as I would like to fill my blog with my favourites and those I have high regard for, I believe in also spending some time discussing that which I do not care for; be it personal taste or simply disapproval of technique — even this information has its uses, if nothing else to provide guidance to others. And those I have previously criticized, have all understood my reasons and taken my comments in stride.

So as not to be completely negative about the state of corporate menswear in SL (for, despite my personal preferences, I am aware of other creators who provide non-EGA fashion), I would like to offer up a few suggestions to those who do wish to maintain a modern corporate image in this virtual world. You will likely not be disappointed with the quality of the following designers and their wares:

Just to name a few off the top of my head.  Happy shopping.

  1. Hello Mr Anatine,

Miss Flasheart was once quite active in Caledon, running her ‘Prim & Proper’ clothing stores in several locations, including one of the sites in Victoria City that now belongs to me and houses ‘Laurel Crown’, Miss Daehlie’s line of ladieswear. I also recall that for a while Miss Flasheart owned one of the duchies, Loch Avie, perhaps. After leaving Caledon to concentrate on her own Shengli-la sims, Miss Flasheart then re-emerged as an active resident of Victoriana, eventually moving her five sims to sit to Victoriana’s west. It seems that there are only three sims remaining now.

  2. I meant ‘Shengri-la’, of course.

  3. Greetings, Mr Magellan,

Always a pleasure to hear from you! Thank you for the additional information.

And I do hope that you are keeping well these days.

    Cheers,

    Elric

    *0__o…..

This reminds me of a pricey plaid skirt I purchased in a beautiful store filled with beautiful clothes. It was the first and possibly last item I would ever purchase from that particular designer because the mismatch of the pattern on the BACK of the item was dreadful.

I did learn that when a creator does not display both front and back of an outfit ~ one should approach the items offered for sale with caution. A good creator/merchant) will offer the customer views from both angles (if not also a third viewpoint) because they have nothing to hide ~ and let’s face it. No matter HOW good we look from the front, most of our time spent in SL is looking at the backside of our AVs and if the designer can’t carry through to a 360 vision then they should just offer posters to be hung on a wall.

Personally the collars and lapels on these outfits make me want to cry. Even worse, while you love crevats, I am a total whore for ties and no matter how hard I look at those images I can’t convince myself that those are prim ties.

If they are..well then ….I need a new pair of eyes.

A few designers understand how much of an impression a GOOD tie can make….it’s not just an afterthought! It makes a statement. Sends a message. Like a fine pair a shoes a man’s tie speaks volumes, even more so because it is smack dab in the middle and draws the eyes like a magnet….and those say *clip on*

    • You’ve clearly been hanging out with far too many Virgos! /me snorts

Speaking of ties, I couldn’t agree more and have been visually stalking Rene Auberjonois’ character, Paul Lewiston, from Boston Legal for his ties. Given my preference for narrow ties, I’m stuck with a less than thrilling selection, and certainly few designer ties.

      But I’m not bitter…

And speak not of clip-ons… such a filthy word.

*^__^* I seem to surround myself with Virgo unconciously ~ but wisely, knowing that they will always just get things done! Squirrels need all the help they can get, seeing how they understand the concept of burying nuts for a future date but can’t seem to remember to document where they put them ;)

I am so not surprised about the narrow tie preference ….ditto.

The lack of inworld tie disigners of note….and of ties worth wearing, let alone purchasing drives this neko up the wall and over the other side. I don’t understand the disconnect betten RL and SL fashion in this regard. Any high end mens’ fashion store prides itself on a splendid tie collection, and the best ones have them laid out like candy (and oh boy do they attract men like women to a shoe display)….guys don’t have that many options and this is one are where they can express themselves.

        *slams paw down on table*

        I am very DIS-A-POINTED!
